Three Main Objectives of Plain English Writing
My first post did an adequate job of covering the three main goals of plain English writing: clarity, accessibility and usability.
Clarity
I made sure the content explains what the business does. I put the important info at the top. I kept the sentences direct. This way, users understand the message by the time they read it. They do not need to be re-read. Try to figure out complicated words.
Accessibility
Writing uses language that people use in everyday conversations. I avoided using terms and complex phrases. This makes the content accessible to people, including those with different reading levels. No one gets left out. Confused.
Usability (for the web)
The content is set up for scanning using the F-pattern. This makes it easier for users to find information. I put points first. The layout helps users read quickly. This matches how users quickly decide whether they want to stay on a page. Delivering info quickly helps users engage and makes it more effective.
a. Describe one specific technique you used to improve readability in your revised version and explain why it is effective. (4 Marks)
One specific technique I used to improve readability was breaking content into short paragraphs and structured sections instead of using a large block of text. This works well because people who read things online do not actually read every word. They look at the content quickly. When I use paragraphs, it is easier for people who read my writing to find the important things and understand what the content is saying. It also helps people think clearly and stay interested in what I am writing. This is very important when people are reading things on the web.
b. What was the most challenging aspect of applying the F-Pattern and Plain English writing principles? How did you overcome it? (5 Marks)
The hardest part of using the F-pattern and plain English writing rules was making things without sounding boring or unprofessional. I had to make sure the writing was easy to understand but not patronizing. It is tough to avoid using words or long explanations without making the message too simple. Sometimes I wanted to use interesting language, but that goes against the plain English rules.
I got around this problem by remembering what I was trying to do: make the content easy to read and understand. I put the important information first and got rid of anything that was not necessary. I also tried to write like I was talking to someone, which made the writing clear and still sounds good for a business. The F-pattern and plain English writing rules were helpful in making the content easy to understand and quick to read.
